Hollywood Park Fall Meet 2004

Declan's Moon Takes the Futurity
By Emily Hufford

Unbeaten Declan's Moon thrust himself squarely in the position of champion two-year-old colt by winning the grade one Hollywood Futurity at Hollywood Park on Saturday. With an easy score over the fast-closing Giacomo and Breeders' Cup Juvenile shocker Wilko, Declan's Moon proved that he has beaten almost all of the "big" two-year-old colts this year. Finishing fifth in the Futurity was Proud Accolade, another horse touted by many to be quite special.

In September, Declan's Moon defeated Roman Ruler in the Del Mar Futurity. Roman Ruler went on to win the Norfolk Stakes. The only horse that stands between Declan's Moon and the Eclipse Award is the also unbeaten Rockport Harbor, the darling of the East Coast.

Declan's Moon, who was ridden by Victor Espinoza in the Futurity, is by Malibu Moon, and is trained by Ron Ellis.

Rock Hard Ten Changes Trainers
by Emily Hufford

The popular Rock Hard Ten, who earlier this year won the Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park after finishing second in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), has been transferred to the barn of Richard Mandella. The three-year-old son of Kris S was previously trained by Jason Orman. Orman was very "hands on" with Rock Hard Ten. No reason was given for the transfer.

Richard Mandella is certainly a "now" trainer, having won four Breeders' Cup races in 2003. He recently lost two top horses from his barn with the retirements of both Halfbridled and Pleasantly Perfect.
