Stellar Magic Surprises
By Steve Martinelli

Stellar Magic, a mere $17,000 purchase at Barretts earlier this year, ran down the heavily favored Texcess in the final 100 yards to win the $100,000 San Mateo Mile Saturday at Bay Meadows.

The three-year-old race looked to be Texcess's to lose. Coming off a third in the San Rafael and a win in the Delta Jackpot, Texcess was bet down to 3-5. However, he was up on a fast pace of 22:3 and 45:2 for the half and could not hold off the strong late charge of Stellar Magic.

Stellar Magic won by 1 1/2 lengths coming from well off the pace to win in a good time of 135:2 for the one mile. It was his second win in a row after a powerful allowance win at Golden Gate Fields in January. He is trained by Brian Pitnick, who got the first stakes win of his career. Pitnick said the $200,000 El Camino Derby on March 12 would be Stellar Magic's next goal.
