Sunday morning I wandered the backside again, mostly on a mission to find Southern Image. Rock Hard Ten worked on Saturday and cold walked on Sunday, looking none the worse for wear. Giacomo was curled up in the straw, taking a mid morning nap, and Indian Ocean was preparing to go out for a workout.

Imperialism was getting a bath and the four-year-old gray horse is in "great condition" according to his longtime companion, the groom they call "Shortman." He still isn't scheduled to run for at least another month and a half, but he does look good and is as playful as ever. Wannawinemall is at a farm.

On the hunt for Southern Image we ran in to Battle Won, who shipped into California from Kentucky for the Bing Crosby Handicap.

Finally, Southern Image made an appearance. Whatever his foot troubles are, were, or will be, this big dark bay son of Halo's Image has never looked better physically. He is glowing, muscular, and happy.

Kona Gold and Son of a Pistol came up behind us together. The two old boys, once such great warriors on the racetrack, are loving Del Mar, as is their trainer Bruce Headley who won the Fleet Treat Stakes on Friday night with Soldier's Kiss.

He said that Surf Cat, who peered his dark head out of his stall while we spoke, is doing well, and Surf Cat's groom also said that Storm Wolf, the other stable star, is doing well, also.

Plus Mr. Headley put me on Son of a Pistol, but that's a different story.

A report on the Sunday afternoon races will come Monday night!
