Daily Kentucky Derby Report #1

It's that time of year again, where mobs of press descend on Churchill Downs in hopes to catch a good story or a glimpse of a Derby contender or 2, or 20. The past few days have seen the Turf Angels scouting out the Derby contender's locations and today was the first day we went to report. Another report will come on Saturday, and the daily reports will begin on Wednesday, all the way until Derby Day. Rain or shine, we will go out and bring you the most candid Derby news from Churchill Downs.

Today Afleet Alex took his first tour of Churchill Downs, jogging alongside his pony as is customary for the bay son of Northern Afleet. Just a short time later he was nestled snug in his stall, relaxing and avoiding the mobs of press. Greeely's Galaxy galloped and I must say, I was a bit impressed. I wasn't expecting him to look so well, but the chestnut colt had his head up, ears pricked, and took in the sights while galloping strongly.

Noble Causeway

Runway Model was the only Oaks filly that we saw on the track, and she went with a pony before worked a bullet, four furlongs in :47.20.

High Fly and Noble Causeway were on the track for Nick Zito while we were there. Earlier, Bellamy Road worked five furlongs in 1:02.80. Back at the barn, Zito said, "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It will never happen to me again. All I can do is keep everything the same. This is the Kentucky Derby, if you go in there with 4 or 5 horses, the other 15 aren't going to be happy about that."

Yesterday, trainer Bob Holthus seemed quietly pleased with Greater Good as his stable star walked the shedrow. Until Saturday!
