Daily Kentucky Derby Report, 5/4
by Emily Hufford, Photos by Amelia Baldree

The temperatures hovered in the low 30's during the early part of the morning, and we huddled by the rail, watching anxiously for any signs of a Derby contender, as we had been doing for the past several days. Sun King was one of the first hroses on the track, and I was not pleased with him. I thought his stride looked bad, and he didn't thrill me. Then again, it was nearly pitch black outside and I could hardly see anything.

Bellamy Road Is Strong In His Gallop

Greater Good came out next, and he is just flourishing. Every day he looks better and better, and his gallops are getting stronger. I know that coming from behind in such a big field is a task, but he is going to give his all, as usual.

Bellamy Road finally emerged in the daylight. It was a photographer's Christmas as the giant strutted across the track, acting up when he passed the sea of media. Another day, still impressed with the big horse.

Culinary

We wandered around during the break and saw a pretty little gray filly getting a bath, so I stopped to take a picture. The next thing I noticed was that it was Culinary. She is a very sweet tempered, eye catching filly.

Flower Alley

Wilko, Sort It Out, Rugula, Runway Model, Noble Causeway, High Fly, all made their typical appearances. After the break High Limit and Greeley's Galaxy worked, along with Ghostzapper. It was a busy morning, as usual, but it was an even busier afternoon. Sort It Out schooled with stablemates Senor Swinger and Mother, and Greater Good schooled as well. Other top horses in the paddock were Shaconage, Runway Model, Sweet Return, Rushin' to Altar, Culinary, and Meteor Storm. All three of Todd Pletcher's colts schooled, and they are just phenomenal looking. Bandini stunned, as usual, and Flower Alley was also very impressive. Coin Silver, probably the longest shot of the three, was also the dullest of the three, in my opinion, but he is still glowing, just not as much as his stablemates.
